Very well done.
Yes, we all know many at the center of it all... single-dom.
But everyone seems to be looking for something slightly different.

Donna Reed was HOT.
:)
And perhaps dating in "those days" was easier because there were some sort of set ground rules, per se...
and... MARRAIGE meant something. You didn't say "till death do us part, for richer or poorer..." and then walk away at a whim. Our grandparents may have fought for YEARS, but they stuck to the marraige and the vows. It meant something.

Keep on bloggin'.

All I can say is that after my last relationship my only comment was, "I don't even consider it falling in love anymore, I just think of it as discovering that everyone is absolutely crazy one beautiful person at a time."

But even this nugget of "wisdom" doesn't protect me. After a year of licking my wounds, I have a new crush. Let's face it, we, as a race, are gluttons for love and (therefore) its consequences.

Wish me luck.

We're simultaneously afraid of being alone and of losing our individuality. If we have one sated, we're afraid of losing or gaining the other. It's easy to romanticize a time in which there were rules for relationships, but through the course of history we have realized that those were constructed by people who were too afraid to take on the status quo or people who wanted to preserve a certain dynamic of power and subordination; to expect that one can enter into a relationship with a preconceived set of rules is naive and ultimately stunts any true growth in a relationship. For me the only idea I try to hold onto as I enter a relationship is that I can't get attached one way or another to how the relationship will turn out. I think a fear of doing or saying the wrong thing prevents many people from truly stating what is on their minds--perhaps because of a deep seeded fear of being alone. Communication, without fear of reprisal or rejection, must be the cornerstone of a healthy relationship. It is only through unfiltered, uncensored communication that two people can truly discover if they are compatible.

Very well-written and insightful, Laura. Thanks for sharing!

Interesting blog and inciteful, but I think several points have been omitted. First, the romantisizing of how relationships once worked just might be more myth than fact. Women felt powerless back then, until Betty Friedan wrote "The Feminine Mystique," and women would never be happy again. Online dating is a farce, as many men will tell you. Many (not all) women use it as a confidence booster or confidence game - eliciting responses from men for their amusement and the amusement of their friends. Or, they take a similar approach as companies do regarding online applications, meaning, the "let my non-answer be my answer."
