Perpetual relationship dysfunctions are probably the more common addictions than drugs and booze. Not just love relationships, but employment, friendships, community choices, etc.

In my experience, few people ever change a habit solely by individual resolve and self-reflection. In my experience, patterns of addictive behaviour are invisibly woven through our character with many threads of self-deception. And self-deceptions are pretty much impossible to spot.... on our own.

In my experience, the most common ingredients for major change of addictive, compulsive, habitual patterns include: a PAINFUL realization of one's habitual choices, deep admission of a problem, and willingness to listen to and follow through with the input of others.

Albert Einstein is quoted as saying "We can't solve problems using the same thinking we used when we created them".

I hope your friend stops long enough to listen. Then follows through with different behaviours. These are the only pathways to real change I have ever witnessed.

Ciao.

That sounds like a good idea to me. At some point we all have to recognize our bad habits and work towards eliminating them! I wish you and your friend Kim good luck in this new decade.

oh, that i could do the same.

mid-way through 2009 i met a few baddies... my current artist/lovah has one or two issues of his own (don't we all) but i don't think i'm ready to chuck him just yet... although i do admit to waiting for something, anything to set him off so he reveals himself.

he's an artist, after all... aren't ALL creative types kinda messy? :-)
